Spring weather can be unpredictable. If severe weather hits unexpectedly, the risk of injury and death increases, so planning ahead makes sense. Spring is the time of year when many things change, including the weather.

Thunderstorms cause most of the severe spring weather. They bring lightning, tornadoes and flooding. Whenever warm, moist air collides with cool, dry air, thunderstorms can occur.

Because spring weather is so unpredictable, planning ahead makes sense. Advance planning for thunderstorms require specific safety precautions. You may follow many of the same steps for all extreme weather events. You should have on hand:

battery operated flashlights, battery operated radio and extra batteries;

an emergency 72 hour survival kit, which is essentially enough food & water for 3 days;

personal hygiene items;

blankets or sleeping bags;

copies of insurance and property information;

first aid kit;

emergency cash & prescribed medication

Tell family members where to seek appropriate shelter as soon as they are aware of an approaching storm. Practice your emergency plan for every type of severe weather. Show family members where the emergency supplies are stored, and make sure they know how to turn off the water, gas and electricity in your home.

For public weather warnings you may follow the Environment Canada link at: www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/warnings/warnings_e.html

Waste Management Petrolia Landfill site is located at 4052 Oil Heritage Road. Waste Management may be contacted by phone at 519-882-3044.

Waste Management continues to make changes to their operations at the Petrolia Landfill site. Waste Management has made the corporate decision to reduce the flow of waste to the Petrolia landfill and redirect wastes to other landfill sites. The annual waste tonnage directed to the Petrolia landfill has been reduced from an annual amount of over 200,000 metric tons down to 80,000 metric tons. Most of the large semi-trailers will not be delivering wastes to the site.

There will be no changes made to the positioning of the dumpsters at the landfill site. The site operators have determined that air space is available east of the current scale house. The operators will be placing wastes in this area making it unsafe to move the Township dumpsters.

The site is open on:

Saturday mornings from 8:00 am to 11:00 am

Only for Enniskillen residents for the placement of household wastes in the dumpsters. The scales will not be open on Saturday mornings for disposal of other wastes. Residents may place bagged household wastes in the dumpsters from:

Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

After discussions with the site operators a change is being implemented in regards to the range of household wastes that will be accepted in the dumpsters. Residents should continue to place household wastes in garbage bags. Residents will permitted to place large household wastes items in the dumpsters throughout the year. There will no longer be large household waste days.

Acceptable wastes include: bagged household wastes, sofas, chairs, tables, lamps, pictures, shelving, patio and lawn furniture, toys, gardening tools and equipment, dresser, mattress as well as toilets and sinks.

Unacceptable wastes include: windows, building materials, sheds, shingles, flooring, trim, bathtubs, heating and cooling systems, swimming pool liners, counter tops, yard wastes.

Recycling: 1 & 2 plastics, flattened cardboard, newspaper, magazines, office paper, steel cans, aluminum cans, clear and coloured glass bottles and jars.

Hazardous Wastes are accepted at Clean Harbours Canada, 4090 Telfer Road, the laste Saturday of March, April, May, June, September and October from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (ie. paint, propane tanks, batteries and pesticides). Please review the following website for further details: www.lambtononline.ca or phone 519-845-0801.

Metal Household Appliances: drop off arrangements can be made with the following businesses to accept household appliances. Washers, dryers, dishwashers, BBQs, refergerators, freezers and air conditioners (the refrigerant must be removed by a licensed person and the appliance properly tagged).

Please call in advance to discuss the conditions for accepting these types of materials:

Scott’s Auto Wreckers and Trijan Industries accept auto and truck batteries.

Digital Friends 1121 Evett Street, Sarnia 519-344-3334

A new township resident ID card has been circulated with the October waterbills, and must be used when disposing of residential wastes or recyclable items at the Waste Management landfill at Petrolia. This card must be available for presentation when a resident enters the site to dispose of their household wastes. Landlords should direct their tenants to contact the municipal office to obtain an ID card.

Council has currently hired a part time person to monitor the use of the dumpsters at the landfill site. Be sure to have your township resident ID card available when you enter the landfill site.

Effective October 1, 2012, you will no longer be required to sort your recyclables when using the recycling facilities. Waste Management sorts the materials at their recycling plant.

On behalf of the Council of the Township of Enniskillen, I would like to welcome you to our municipality, which is located in the heart of Lambton County, in the “great southwest” region of the Province of Ontario.

Almost 3,200 people call Enniskillen home in more than 1,100 households. The area is about 340 square kilometers or about 82,000 acres of highly productive farmland. There are two residental hamlets within the township, including Oil City and Marthaville.

Our municipality’s rich history began in the 1830′s. The township was named after the Earl of Enniskillen in Ireland by the Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, Sir John Colborne. The Township was officially incorporated in 1855. However, it was the discovery of oil in 1858, that changed the course of Enniskillen Township’s history, making it the birthplace of oil in North America! Even today, more than 150 years later, many oil fields continue to produce “black gold” for the important petro-chemical industry of Lambton County.

Agriculture is not only the largest industry in the province, but also within the borders of Enniskillen. The major crops grown are soybeans, wheat and corn in addition to various livestock operations. The newest sector to emerge is the greenhouse industry. The largest crop is soybeans which is processed in two facilities in the province as well as exported to various Asian markets as food grade edible soybeans. Corn is grown not only for livestock feed, but also to supply the ethanol plant in nearby St. Clair Township.

As Mayor, I welcome you and willing to hear from you anytime with suggestions how we can continue to make Enniskillen a better place to live, work and play!

Kevin Marriott, Mayor
